IM Grade 8 Virtual Unit Overviews

September 20 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

Ongoing year 1 support to help you make effective instructional decisions as you move through each unit of the IM 6-8 curriculum.

IM Grade 8 Virtual Unit Overviews

How can learning about the math story of a unit support planning and teaching? The purpose of Unit Overviews is to learn about the progression of understanding of the mathematics in a unit. These sessions build on teachers’ understanding of the problem-based lesson structure in Teach & Learn.

Unit Overviews support teachers in planning lessons more efficiently and keeping on pace more confidently, as they understand where different skills and concepts fit into the progression of understanding of the unit. Teachers make sense of the story of the unit and IM’s approach to the mathematics by examining selected activities from across the unit to describe how they illustrate the progression of understanding. They talk through how the concepts in a unit build on each other and connect to past and future work, dig into the mathematics of key lessons, and discuss the progression of understanding that focuses learning goals and important connections. An important part of Unit Overviews is doing math together and anticipating how students might respond to selected activities.

Learning Goals

  • Recognize the progression of understanding across the unit and how it is assessed.
  • Identify how the mathematical content of this unit connects to previous and upcoming units.
  • Meet unit-specific goals around planning and implementation.
