More Than Capable: Having brave conversations about identity and math.

April 22 @ 8:30 am - 11:30 am

We all aim to create learning environments where all students thrive, but have we been avoiding one of the biggest factors that impacts the learning opportunities that we offer our students? Join us for a conversation about identity and how our experiences play a role in our classroom community and our students’ personal math identities.

Facilitated by Dr. Rainey Briggs, Director of Elementary Education in the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District, and Math Institute Mathematics Coaching Specialist, Paige Richards, this virtual workshop offers an opportunity for participants to learn from a variety of perspectives, as they engage in conversation and learning around educators’ experiences talking about inequities related to mathematics. A brief activity will invite participants to explore their first recollections of race and inequities and how these experiences impact one’s ability to have honest conversations about race and inequities particularly in the educational setting. Participants will discover ways in which conversation and practice converge and how we, as educators, can begin to disrupt and dismantle systemic inequities.

A great way to start a larger conversation, facilitators will provide time for participants to plan for action that can be utilized in their schools/districts. District and school teams are encouraged to attend. Links to resources will be provided.
