Professional Learning

Continued learning is all about exploring new ways to communicate, building confidence, and strengthening our skills and passion for our profession – education. The Mathematics Institute of Wisconsin approaches professional learning differently by offering courses and workshops that engage you in the same active learning and productive struggle seen in the math classroom. The focus is not purely on progressions or on standards, but is also on equipping you with a strong set of skills that you can carry to your building or classroom.

District or School Programming

Bring a customized Professional Development program to your public, independent, or charter school based on your team’s needs. Whether you wish to foster educator understanding of math standards or build content knowledge, we can design a plan to support and enhance the mathematics programs in your schools. Commitments may vary from 2 days to 20 days depending on the size of your staff, scope of work desired, etc.

Online Learning – Math Institute Fellows

This 10-week online program is designed to create a statewide mathematics community of instructional leaders. There are three required virtual meetings but the majority of the course can be designed to fit individual schedules. This course is meant to supplement and continue the work done as part of the summer Institutes.

Course Credit

The Mathematics Institute of Wisconsin has built a strong partnership with the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee to offer credit for almost all of our professional development programs.

Elementary Content

Our K-5 courses deepen content knowledge through understanding of the progressions documents and the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Although the focus is K-5 content, many secondary teachers find value in understanding these standards progressions and how they support student learning in later years.

Secondary Content

Our 6-12 courses deepen mathematical content knowledge through the use of the progressions documents and the Standards for Mathematical Practice. As with our other programs, the focus in these workshops is 6-12 content, but many elementary teachers find value in understanding these standards progressions and how the K-5 standards support student learning at the secondary level.

Instructional Practice

Principles to Actions (NCTM, 2014) Guiding Principle of Teaching and Learning states: “An excellent mathematics program requires effective teaching that engages students in meaningful learning through individual and collaborative experiences that promote their ability to make sense of mathematical ideas and reason mathematically” (p. 5).

These workshops are designed to enhance the instructional practices of the teaching of mathematics to support the learning of each and every student through problem solving and sense-making. Specific research-based effective mathematics teaching practices and how to implement these practices in your classroom will be explored.

Math Coaching

Our coaching workshops focus on skills, content knowledge, and beliefs to empower coaches to support teachers with a wide range of backgrounds. Designed for Math Coaches, Math Specialists, Math Lead Teachers, and anyone else who falls into a mathematics leadership role.

Administrator workshops focus on the skills and beliefs to support high quality mathematics instruction. Designed for Administrators, Principals, Evaluators, Special Education Directors, and any school leader of mathematics.
