Bringing Excellence to Your Instruction Techniques

Principles to Actions (NCTM, 2014) Guiding Principle of Teaching and Learning states:  “An excellent mathematics program requires effective teaching that engages students in meaningful learning through individual and collaborative experiences that promote their ability to make sense of mathematical ideas and reason mathematically” (p. 5).

These workshops are designed to enhance the instructional practices of the teaching of mathematics to support the learning of each and every student through problem solving and sense-making. Specific research-based effective mathematics teaching practices and how to implement these practices in your classroom will be explored.

Our Instructional Practice sessions help to:

  • Build your skills across all subjects of instruction, not just math
  • Communicate the importance of mathematics and help students embrace it
  • Equip you to be a more effective educator

Designing Professional Development that People Value

Grade Level

Content Focus

Math Professional Development

Overview

Why do teachers have a negative reaction to professional development?

We’ve all been in professional development that felt like a waste of our time. The kind of PD that feels like it was being done “to” you instead of “with” or “for” you.

How do you design better learning for your colleagues that honors what they already know? How do you communicate through your PD design that you know they are busy and you value their time?

Time is valuable – make it count! Walk away with ideas to create professional development that engages teachers deeply in the content of the learning while building on their expertise.

Overview

Mathematics is uniquely positioned to support student problem solving and critical thinking. The Leading for Mathematical Proficiency Framework supports students as thinkers in a math context. But if this is only about the math, we miss an opportunity to engage students at a deeper level.

Come engage in a deep analysis of the dispositions and practices that support student engagement in the direct context of mathematics. Leave with concrete specific ideas to create a dynamic culture of curiosity in your math classroom, where all voices are valued –and supported– rather than a fixed culture of memory and procedure.

Using Mathematical Representations to Make Sense of Number and Operations

Grade Level

K-5

Content Focus

Instructional Practice & Math Content

Overview

To prepare students for math beyond elementary school, we must create opportunities for students to deeply understand numbers and how to operate with numbers. Using different mathematical representations can create opportunities for students to move flexibly among and between the representations to solidify their understanding of number and operations.

Get ready to dig into different standards and related math tasks to try out ways to use and connect mathematical representations with your students. Walk away with the tasks and the learning.
