WHO
Teachers implementing IM 6–12 Math who are comfortable with the problem-based lesson structure and want to make classroom discussion more robust
WHEN
While implementing IM 6–12 Math
DESCRIPTION
How can the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions framework support students in engaging in mathematical discussions? The purpose of this session is to gain an understanding of the 5 Practices (Anticipate, Monitor, Select, Sequence, Connect), and how the curriculum embeds this framework in the materials to support both teacher planning and student learning. The case study provides an example of what each practice looks like in a classroom discussion. The session builds on understanding of the problem-based lesson structure developed in Teach & Learn and offers an opportunity to analyze and discuss a case study from an IM classroom.
LEARNING GOALS
- Paraphrase the key ideas of each of the 5 Practices named in the framework for productive discussions.
- Explain the teacher’s role in orchestrating discussions, both in planning and during the lesson.
- Give examples of how the materials support teacher planning for orchestrating mathematics discussions
- Articulate how the framework supports student understanding through discourse.
- **Due to the interactive nature of this virtual session and copyrights on the materials recordings are not available.**
