An Empowering Session for Administrators and School Leaders Who Are Supporting the Work (K-12)

Shifting to a problem-based approach to math instruction is system-wide work. Oftentimes administrators and other school leaders may not feel they have the “math chops” to support this work, which is absolutely not true! During this session, participants will have the opportunity to build their individual and collective capacity as math instructional leaders in support of this shift in their own settings.

Learning Goals/Outcomes

  • Build an understanding of what problem-based math instruction looks like, sounds like, and feels like, and how this connects and supports the eight mathematical practice standards
  • Explore the shift in both the student and teacher roles in a problem-based math classroom, and reflect on how this compares to a more traditional direct-instruction model of teaching
  • Consider how to support teachers shifting to problem-based instruction in educator effectiveness cycles through an examination of the connection between components of the Danielson Framework and NCTM’s eight Effective Math Teaching practices
  • Examine various resources, ideas and strategies that can be used to support a shift to problem based teaching and learning, and collaborate with other professionals in similar roles to plan and problem solve.
